Elderly woman dies three months after attack

An 89-year-old woman who was attacked in her home in Co Donegal three months ago has died in hospital.

Suzy Arthur was the victim of a brutal assault by thieves who had posed as painters.

Ms Arthur and her 91-year-old sister Isa were attacked on 1 July at their home at Tullyrap, near Raphoe, by a gang who had offered to paint the house.

They went on to ransack the house, throwing Ms Arthur to the ground and breaking her hip. Isa is said to be distraught at the death of her sister.

Their nephew Joe McKean said the attack, from which the younger sister never recovered or got over, was the reason for her death.

"That just destroyed her life," he told Highland Radio. "If they hadn't broke into her that day, Suzy would still be alive."

Mr McKean said his elderly aunt was very independent and able to get about before the assault, but was left unable to walk and permanently hospitalised afterwards.

"She could never walk after it. She was able to take a few steps for the first couple of weeks, but after that she had just given up," he said.

The attack came during a spate of robberies targeting elderly people in Co Donegal over the summer. No-one has yet been arrested in connection to the incident.
