Eirgrid has announced the "preferred corridor" for a high capacity power line in the west of Ireland.
It is proposed to run a 400KV line from North Mayo to Flagford in Co Roscommon.
After 16 possible routes were identified earlier this year, one starting northwest of Moygownagh and terminating close to Carrick on Shannon has emerged as the most favoured.
The line would run west of Ballina, east of the towns of Foxford and Swinford and south of Charlestown and Ballaghaderreen.
The route had already been judged by Eirgrid to be the "least constrained" of the ones under consideration, as the company says it best avoids environmental, heritage or technical issues that have been identified.
The Grid West project will develop a new high capacity power line to connect electricity from renewable energy resources to the national grid.
It is part of a wider plan to upgrade the grid by 2025.
Open days will be held over the next two weeks along the preferred route corridor. Eirgrid says it will then begin speaking to landowners in the areas to identify a possible route for the line.
The company is emphasising that no final decision has been made and the entire project is still subject to planning approval.
