The US Navy has said "several" people have died and others have been injured at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in Washington.

NBC has reported that at least 12 people have been shot, including four dead, citing a senior naval officer.

Police said up to three gunmen are involved, with one reportedly dressed in military fatigues.

One shooter is believed to be "contained" in a building on the base, according to law enforcement officials.

Police earlier confirmed that ten people were shot in the incident.

About 3,000 people work at the facility, which is in southeast Washington along the Anacostia River.

The sea systems unit designs, builds, buys and maintains the navy's ships.

The US Capitol Police are assisting in the investigation of the shooting.

The US Federal Aviation Administration halted flights at Washington Reagan National Airport due to the security operation, but has since lifted its "ground stop" on departures.

Earlier, planes already in the air were continuing to land as aircraft scheduled to depart for National were being held on the ground at airports around the US, according to the FAA.

The airport is located in Virginia across the Potomac River from the Navy Yard.

There most certainly is a correlation between gun control and gun violence and death from gunshot wounds. This is the only correlation that counts when discussing gun control. Does it prevent people from getting shot? Yes. End of argument. Your statement, that reducing guns doesn't necessarily reduce "violent crime" if you categorize violent crime as anything including "force" does a good job of confusing people into thinking you've made a real point. That's called specious argument. It looks good, but it ain't good.
