A court has been told that a Canadian visitor may lose her eye after she was struck by a glass bottle during a festival in Co Offaly last month.

Gary Ward, 19, of Scurragh, Birr, has been charged with assaulting Marie Gauvin at the Birr Vintage Festival in Co Offaly on 4 August.

Mr Ward appeared before a sitting of Birr District Court today, where he was charged with assaulting Ms Gauvin.

Ms Gauvin, who is originally from Birr but now lives in Canada, was on holidays with her father when she was struck and sustained serious eye injuries.

In court today, Judge Catherine Staines was told that Mr Ward is alleged to have thrown a glass bottle and caused the injuries.

Inspector Declan Dunne said that as a result of the incident Ms Gauvin received 22 stitches and may lose her eye.

Judge Staines adjourned the case until 12 November, when the book of evidence is due to be served on Mr Ward.

Mr Ward was remanded on bail with a number of conditions.
