Gardaí are questioning five men in connection with a foiled armed robbery at the home of a businessman in Glounthaune in east Cork.

The businessman, who runs a mobile fast food business, has been named locally as Pat Glavin.

The five men were detained following a planned garda operation targeting organised crime.

They are being questioned at three garda stations in Co Cork and can be held for up to seven days.

Two men, one in his 30s, the other in his 40s, were arrested at the house at around 10.30pm last night.

Two others were arrested about two hours later during a follow-up search when a car was stopped in nearby Glanmire.

A fifth man was arrested at a house in Mayfield.

All five, who are from the city, and well-known to gardaí, are suspected of being involved in other robberies.

A search for weapons is continuing.
