Device explodes outside Belfast PSNI station

The PSNI is investigating after two devices were thrown at a police station in west Belfast.

One device exploded outside Woodbourne police station in Stewartstown Road just after 10.30pm last night.

The other failed to detonate and the scene was cordoned off.

A group of children picked up the unexploded device and handed it to police officers.

Dissident republicans have been blamed for the incident.

British army bomb experts were called to the area, which remained sealed off this morning.

A police spokesman said there were no reports of any injuries or damage.

The children, some as young as nine, approached officers involved in the follow-up security operation and handed over the unexploded device.

Several families had to leave their homes and six neighbouring businesses were unable to open today because of an ongoing security operation.

Chief Superintendent George Clarke said the children were lucky to escape injury.

He said: "Those children may well have picked up the unexploded devices, which are extremely volatile, very, very dangerous, utterly lethal and could function at any time."

He said no one had come forward to claim responsibility and added: "I cannot see the logic of throwing bombs at the back of a police station and then leaving an unexploded one for children to pick up."

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey described the attack as reckless and irresponsible, which put the lives of civilians, including children as well as PSNI personnel at risk.
