The inquest into the death of the 24-year-old model Katy French has returned an open verdict.

The coroner, John Lacy, ruled in accordance with the medical evidence that Ms French died from oxygen starvation to her brain as a result of cocaine and ephedrine.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy said the presence of the drugs was very low but it was possible to have an adverse reaction to small quantities of the drug.

The inquest heard two key witnesses change their evidence.

Kieron Ducie and Ann Corcoran both told the coroner they wished to change the crucial timing in relation to when they became aware Ms French was ill.

Ms French died in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan on 6 December 2007, several days after being admitted.

Ducie, from Lambertstown Manor, Kilmessan in Co Meath, and Corcoran, from Tolka Road in Dublin, were both given suspended jail sentences earlier this year in relation to her death.

They both pleaded guilty to a charge of procuring another person to obtain cocaine.

A second charge of failing to obtain medical assistance for Ms French in a timely fashion was dropped.
