A Dublin man has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison, with the final two years suspended, for the manslaughter of journalist, Eugene Moloney.

22 year-old Gary Burch, of Kennington Close in Templeogue, pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of the 55-year-old Donegal man, who was killed on Camden Street in Dublin last summer.

Mr Moloney was attacked on his way home from a friend's stag party in Dublin city centre in the early hours of 24 June 2012.

The journalist was hit in the head after passing a group of youths outside a nightclub on Camden Street. He never regained consciousness and died a short time later.

Burch, of Kennington Close in Templeogue, pleaded guilty to his manslaughter.

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court he was given a sentence of five and a half years, with the final two years suspended.

Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring said she had to take a number of mitigating factors into account.

She said Burch had expressed genuine remorse for the killing, he had apologised to the victim's family and had no previous convictions.

Outside the court, Mr Moloney's brother, Sean, expressed disappointment with the length of the sentence. He said nothing could bring his brother back, and he added that the judge had done all that she could.
