Funerals of murdered brothers in Co Mayo

The funerals of the two brothers murdered in Co Mayo last week have taken place in Castlebar.

Jack and Tommy Blaine, aged 76 and 69, were found dead in their home on New Antrim Street last Wednesday morning.

Several hundred people attended mass at the Church of the Holy Rosary.

Among them were Taoiseach Enda Kenny, former minister Pádraig Flynn and his daughter ex-Mayo TD Beverley Flynn.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with both murders.

Mourners were told from the altar that the murders had led to horror, shock, disbelief and fear.

In his homily, local curate Fr Michael Farragher spoke about the darkness that had enveloped Castlebar since news of the murders emerged.

But he said their tragic deaths did not negate the lives of the two men.

Fr Farragher said one of the most fitting tributes to the brothers in recent days was the description of them as "saints and angels".

The kindness and compassion of people in remembering the two men was widespread, he said.

After mass, the brothers were taken to Castlebar's new cemetery for burial beside their mother.

As the cortège made its way to the cemetery, mourners paused outside their home.

Alan Cawley with an address at Four Winds, Corrimbla South, Ballina, was brought before Swinford District Court last week.

He has been remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on 19 July.
