Thousands of cars to be recalled in Ireland

Around 38,000 cars in Ireland are to be recalled over possible problems with passenger airbags in Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda models.

Toyota Ireland is set to recall around 22,000 vehicles that were manufactured between 2000-2004.

The models affected are the Yaris, Corolla and the Avensis.

Nissan is to recall just over 13,500 cars. The models affected are listed as the Almera, Navara, Pathfinder, Patrol, Tarrano, Tino and the X Trail.

Honda Ireland is to recall around 1,500 cars.

The Honda cars in question mainly date back to 2001 and 2002 and include some Civic, Jazz, and CRV models.

Mazda Ireland is to recall 390 Mazda 6 models.

The voluntary safety recall was prompted by the makers of the airbag that is used by all four car companies.

The concerns surround malfunctioning inflators, which could cause the airbag to deploy abnormally during a crash.

There have been five incidents in the US and Japan, but there were no injuries.

Toyota Ireland has stressed that the move was made as a voluntary and purely precautionary measure.

A spokesperson for Honda Ireland confirmed it will be contacting owners next month for the recall.

He said the company must first make sure they have the correct parts in place to fix any problem before it takes back the cars for inspection.

A Nissan spokesperson said it is not aware of any incident associated with the issue in its vehicles.
