SIPTU has voted to reject the proposed extension to the Croke Park agreement by a margin of 53.7% against, 46.3% in favour.

General President Jack O'Connor said that the vote reflected the sense of grievance among working people and public service workers, in particular, that they are carrying an excessive burden in the post-crisis adjustment.

The result from SIPTU came within minutes of the vote from IMPACT whose members voted to accept the proposed extension to the Croke Park agreement by a margin of 56% to 44%.

The turnout was 65%.

The union will now cast all its votes in favour of the proposed agreement at the ICTU Public Services Committee meeting tomorrow.

Earlier, the Prison Officers' Association voted to accept the Croke Park II proposals by a margin of 64% in favour and 36% against.

The POA had recommended acceptance.

The Public Service Executive Union, which represents mid-ranking civil servants, has also voted to accept the proposals.

The margin was 61% in favour and 39% against.

The turnout was 74%.

General Secretary Tom Geraghty said that after a vigorous debate union members had made a difficult choice and had voted for certainty over uncertainty.

However, he warned that this must be the last occasion on which public servants are targeted as they cannot continue to be expected to carry a disproportionate share of the country's burden.

The Unite trade union today voted to reject the proposals by 84% to 16%.

The union represents around 6,000 workers across the public service.

Unite Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly said they must now follow through with the wishes of their members by standing against any attempt by Government to railroad imposed cuts through.

Yesterday, the Veterinary Officers' Association became the eighth public service union to reject the Croke Park II proposals.

The Irish Federation of University Teachers and the Civil Public and Services Union also voted against the deal.

Members of the IFUT union rejected the proposals by a margin of three to one, while the CPSU also overwhelmingly rejected the agreement.

The Public Services Committee of Congress will tomorrow deliver the overall result of the ballot.

The Government has threatened to legislate for across the board pay cuts of around 7%, if the proposals are rejected.
