Review of Ó Lubhlaí investigation ordered

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan has ordered a review of the investigations into allegations of abuse by Irish summer college founder Domhnall Ó Lubhlaí.

Allegations against Mr Ó Lubhlaí, who died last month, date from 1955.

He was the founder of Irish language college Coláiste na bhFiann in 1968 and previously worked for Gael-Linn.

The Rape Crisis Network had called for a review after it appeared that at least two opportunities in 1991 and 1998 were presented to the gardaí to investigate allegations against him.

Commissioner Callinan said today that he had directed a re-examination of the case to identify any issues that need to be addressed.

While there are new policies in place in relation to this type of investigation, he said there are always lessons that could be learned.

He would not comment on the fact that a tape related to the investigation went missing, but said that all issues would form part of the re-examination.

The review is to be carried out by the Garda's Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Unit based in Dublin.
