A man has died in an incident at Lisheen Mine, near Thurles, in Co Tipperary.

The company operating the mine said the man, the driver of a loader, was found trapped in his vehicle underneath a rockfall yesterday afternoon.

The victim, a Filipino national, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Efforts are being made to safely move his body to the surface.

His name has not been released, but his family were informed of his death yesterday evening.

Lisheen Mine, which employs about 370 people and is part of the Vedanta Resources Group, said the rockfall was a localised incident.

The lead and zinc mine is located between the villages of Moyne and Templetuohy in north Tipperary.

The mine, which normally operates on a 24-hour, seven-day week basis, will be closed until further notice.

The Health and Safety Authority and the company are carrying out investigations.

Management and staff have extended their sympathy to the man's family and colleagues.
