Former junior minister and Fianna Fáil TD Ivor Callely has appeared in court charged with submitting false invoices for mobile phones in Leinster House.

He was arrested at his office in Dublin this morning by detectives from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation and brought before Dublin District Court.

The 54-year-old is facing six charges.

He is accused of using false invoices to claim mobile phone expenses at Leinster House in November 2007, February and April 2008 and between September and December of 2009.

Detective Garda Adrian Kelly told the court that Mr Callely was arrested at his office on the Howth Road in Clontarf at 9.50am and taken to Clontarf Garda Station.

He said Mr Callely made no reply when each of the charges were put to him.

The court was told that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that Mr Callely face trial on indictment, which means the case is to be sent forward to the higher Circuit Criminal Court.

Mr Callely did not speak during the brief hearing.

When asked if the accused would be applying for legal aid, his solicitor said at this point he wanted to take instructions.

There was no garda objection to bail.

Mr Callely was remanded on bail of his own bond of €250.

He is to appear again in court next Thursday for service of the Book of Evidence.
