The Hungarian government has said an Irishman involved in a fatal road crash in Budapest 13 years ago will be allowed to serve his sentence in Ireland, if he first surrenders himself to the authorities in Hungary.
Ciarán Tobin was convicted in his absence of negligent driving after his car struck two children in Budapest in April 2000.
He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Two attempts to extradite him to Hungary have failed.
