Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis has confirmed that a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings is dead.

He has been named as 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev. He was killed in a shootout with police following the shooting of a police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

His 19-year-old brother Dzhokhar A Tsarnaev is still on the run following the shooting in the Boston suburb of Watertown.

He is believed to be the man wearing a white baseball cap in images released by the FBI yesterday.

A US National Security Official said the brothers had been living in the United States for several years.

Main Points

Massachusetts State Police have warned people in the Boston suburb of Watertown not to open their doors.

Police are conducting a door-to-door, street-by-street search due to what it called a "fluid situation".

A massive police operation is under way in Watertown after a university police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was killed.

Another police officer is said to have been shot and critically injured.

The Middlesex district attorney said the two men are suspected of killing the police officer, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed.

Hours earlier, police had released photos of the bombing suspects.

Authorities say the suspects threw explosives from the car as police followed it into Watertown.

The suspects and police exchanged gunfire and one of the suspects was critically injured and later died.

Police say the suspect on the loose is a "terrorist" who "came here to kill people".

Police officers with weapons drawn, and people wearing FBI and ATF jackets, could be seen in the live videos of the scene.

MIT later said it was safe to resume normal activities, but cancelled all classes.

Spokesman for the Massachusetts State Police David Procopio said the motive for the shooting was not known.

He said the investigation would be led by the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office.

A doctor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said Tamerlan Tsarnaev had multiple wounds from gunshots and possibly the blast of an explosive.

Dr Richard Wolfe said: "This was a trauma arrest, multiple injuries, probably, we believe, a combination of blast, potentially gunshot wounds."

The blast injuries may have been caused by "an explosive device, possibly shrapnel, thermal injury. It was pretty much throughout the trunk. It was multiple wounds," he said.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev posted links to Islamic websites and others calling for Chechen independence on what appears to be his page on a Russian language social networking site.

On the site he identifies himself as a 2011 graduate of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, a public school in Cambridge.

It says he went to primary school in Makhachkala, capital of Dagestan, a province in Russia that borders Chechnya, and lists his languages as English, Russian and Chechen.

Boston police said all transit service by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority "has been suspended until further notice".

Vehicle traffic was also suspended in and out of Watertown.

Kurt Schwartz, director of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, asked people in the Boston-area communities of Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton to stay indoors and asked businesses in those areas to remain closed pending further notice.

"People that are at subway stations or at bus stops - we are asking them to go home, we do not want people congregating and waiting for the system to come back on," he said.

Inside the search area, police performed street-by-street checks of yards with full tactical gear, long rifles and full armour.

Commissioner Davis said: "We believe this to be a terrorist. We believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody".

The suspect police are looking for in Watertown is the one seen in images released by the FBI of a man wearing a white cap, he said.

Local television images earlier showed one man lying on the ground surrounded by police officers, however it is not known if he was a suspect in the shooting.

Later, a man was shown being led naked to a police car.

A White House spokesman said President Barack Obama has been briefed on the situation in Boston.
