Seven people die in apartment fire in Germany

Seven people, six of them children, have been killed in a fire in an apartment building in Germany.

Authorities were alerted to the blaze in Backnang, a town near Stuttgart, in the early hours of the morning.

Police said they believe the fire broke out in a second-floor apartment, and said in a statement that their investigation is focusing on a heater in the apartment.

There was no immediate information on the identity of the victims.

Three more people were injured and taken to hospitals.

The building is part of a former leather factory that was converted into a row of three-story apartment blocks.
