Figures published by the CAO show a significant reduction in the number of students choosing to become teachers.
Data on this year's college applications shows an 8% drop in numbers opting for teacher degree courses.
The plight of newly qualified teachers received a lot of publicity this year.
Their pay has been reduced and they have been finding it very hard to find work.
This may be the reason why teaching as a career choice is suddenly looking less attractive.
The drop in applications for teaching courses this year follows a 6% reduction last year.
Other trends that appeared last year are also continuing.
Applications for science and related courses are up again, by 4%.
Arts and social science courses are down.
Applications for medicine are also down this year, by 6.5%.
Agricultural courses continue their surge in popularity with applications up by almost 7% compared to 2012.
The Higher Education Authority has said it is encouraging that figures from the CAO show students are opting for science courses.
Applications for science and related courses have risen by four per cent.
But the number of students choosing to become teachers has fallen by 8%.
The Chief Executive of the HEA, Tom Boland, said this figure reflected the lack of teaching posts available.
