Technical Group urges Govt not to pay €3.1bn

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 05 Februari 2013 | 22.40

The Technical Group of Independent TDs has urged the Government to say it will not pay the €3.1 billion promissory note payment due at the end of March.

Dublin South TD Shane Ross said that the Government must make this Europe's problem, by demanding a write down of the debt, rather than a deal which will transfer the burden to the grandchildren of the Irish people.

Mr Ross said that while this might be a technical default, it was not a moral default as the debt was not incurred by the people in the first place.

The Dáil will debate a private members motion on the issue tonight and tomorrow, with the Technical Group insisting that any deal would require the burden to be shared across the eurozone.

The group claims the Government's negotiating strategy on the issue is in imminent danger of leading to humiliation.
