Horse meat contamination a 'labelling issue'

The European Health Commissioner has said the presence of horse meat in products labelled as beef remains a labelling issue and not a health concern.

Tonio Borg said there had been fraudulent or negligent behaviour "somewhere down the line", but for now it did not pose a problem to public health.

Mr Borg was speaking at a press conference in Brussels this morning.

He is due to attend an informal gathering of European ministers later today, where the latest developments in the horse meat scandal will be discussed.

Mr Borg said one of the main issues on the agenda would be proposals for more intensive cooperation between member states.

The meeting has been called by Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney under the Irish EU presidency.

Ministers from the six other EU member states most affected by the crisis - Britain, France, Sweden, Poland, Luxembourg and Romania - are due to take part.

Mr Borg said he was grateful that the Irish presidency had called the meeting.

He added that he must praise the investigations being carried out by national governments, which he said were being done in a serious way.

In Britain, the Food Standards Agency and the police raided a slaughterhouse in west Yorkshire and a meat plant in Wales.

Both have been shut down pending investigations into claims they supplied and used horse carcasses in burgers and kebabs.

Separately, a team of Polish vets are in Ireland carrying out investigations into the presence of horse meat in frozen burgers, the source of which is believed to have originated from producers in Poland.
