Irishman dies after fall from balcony in Tenerife

An Irishman in his 40s has died in an accident on the Canary Island of Tenerife.

It is understood he fell from the balcony of a third-floor holiday apartment in the small resort of El Médano late last night.

Initial reports said the handrail of the balcony gave way.

It is not known at this stage where he was from in Ireland.

Tenerife police have opened an investigation into his death.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance.
