HMV closes Irish shops, says they will reopen

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 16 Januari 2013 | 22.40

HMV has confirmed that its 16 shops in the Republic of Ireland are closed today.

In a statement to RTÉ News, the company said it is a short-term measure and they will reopen.

HMV would not comment on whether it will seek an examinership in the Irish courts today.

The move to close the Irish shops comes one day after the UK company sought protection from its creditors by going into administration in the UK.

There are fears for up to 300 jobs in Ireland and another 4,000 in the UK.

Meanwhile, the National Consumer Agency has questioned the legal basis on which HMV in Ireland was refusing to honour gift vouchers.

It said HMV Ireland is a separate company to the UK operation and should accept vouchers with immediate effect.

A meeting between the National Consumer Agency and HMV Ireland is taking place, with a view to securing a commitment that gift vouchers will be honoured in Irish shops.

The agency said it engaged with employees of HMV and the UK administrators Deloitte since Monday's announcement that the company was going into administration.
