A fisherman has died after his boat capsized off the Waterford coast this morning.
Johnny Flynn, 43, from Dunmore East was fishing off Brownstown Head near Tramore with his lifelong friend James Tate.
They were in a 4.6m boat when it capsized at around 5.30am.
Both men were wearing lifejackets but only Mr Tate made it ashore.
He had to climb over rocks and through sand dunes before he met somebody out walking and the alarm was raised at 7.45am.
The search and rescue helicopter at Waterford winched Mr Flynn from the water just after 8.30am, but he was unconscious.
Efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at Waterford Regional Hospital.
Mr Tate, who is in his 40s, was taken to hospital suffering from shock and hypothermia.
The boat has been recovered and investigations by gardaí and the Marine Casualty Investigation Board are under way.
Mr Flynn was described by friends as a character around Dunmore East, well-known and loved.
It is six years to the day that another tragedy struck the village with the sinking of the Pere Charles and the loss of five men.
