Drivers warned of severe weather conditions

Drivers are being warned to take care amid a severe weather warning from Met Éireann, which forecasts blizzards in places.

Sleet or snow is expected to fall in parts of Leinster, Ulster and Connaught and Met Éireann has given a special mention for areas of higher ground in Dublin and Wicklow.

Between 5-10cm of snow or sleet is predicted in areas.

The Road Safety Authority is warning drivers to check their local weather forecast before making any journeys.

It is also advising motorists to slow down, stay vigilant and to allow extra time to complete their trip.

Meanwhile, flights to Britain have been delayed and cancelled as a result of adverse weather conditions.

Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus cancelled flights from Dublin to Cardiff and Bristol this morning.

Further Aer Lingus flights to Bournemouth and Heathrow have also been cancelled.

The two Irish airlines are warning of weather related delays are urging passengers to check their websites for up to date information.

Heavy snow falls have caused significant delays and disruption in Britain, with wintery weather sparking a rare "red warning" in Wales.

At least 70 flights were cancelled at Heathrow, while flights at Southampton, Bristol, Glasgow, Jersey and Newcastle were also affected.

British Airways said it had axed 60 flights.

The northern runway at Heathrow was shut for a time this morning for de-icing and snow clearing.

A Heathrow spokesman said it was possible that the southern runway might have to be closed for similar work later.
