Vistakon is to expand its plant in Limerick and create 100 jobs as part of a €100 million investment.
The company is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and is the world's biggest manufacturer of contact lenses.
Vistakon's plant at Plassey manufactures the Acuvue range of daily disposable contact lenses, which are the leading contact lens range in the world.
The plant, first established in 1995, now employs over 600 people and runs over 31 production lines on a 24-hour basis.
It manufactures daily, fortnightly, monthly and colour contact lenses, which are shipped all over the world.
Global demand for its products has led to the expansion, which is being backed by IDA Ireland and the Department of Enterprise.
It will see it bring in two more production lines to the factory, employing an extra 100 people, and about 200 temporary construction jobs in the short-term.
Paul Connolly, a Vice President of Manufacturing within the company's global supply chain, said that Limerick was chosen for this ''strategically important investment because of its track record over many years in providing quality products and excellent customer service to markets around the globe''.
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said: ''Today's announcement that this world-leading company is expanding its operations in Limerick with the creation of 100 new jobs, as well as 200 temporary construction jobs, is great news for the Mid-West and a major vote of confidence in manufacturing in Ireland."
