'30 killed' in air raid on Syrian petrol station

Opposition activists in Syria have said that at least 30 people have been killed in an air raid on a petrol station in Damascus.

"I counted at least 30 bodies. They were either burnt or dismembered," said activist Abu Saeed, who visited the scene in an eastern suburb of the Syrian capital.

Mr Saeed said the raid happened at 1pm local time (11am Irish time).

Another activist, Abu Fouad, said jets had bombarded the area as a consignment of fuel arrived and crowds packed the station.

Video footage taken by activists, which could not be independently verified, showed dozens of vehicles on fire.

The attack came on the day that the UN issued a report saying that at least 60,000 people have died in Syria's conflict.

UN Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay said she had compiled the figure after an "exhaustive" five-month study.

Researchers cross-referenced seven sources to compile a list of 59,648 individuals reported killed between 15 March 2011 and 30 November 2012.

Ms Pillay said: "Given there has been no let-up in the conflict since the end of November, we can assume that more than 60,000 people have been killed by the beginning of 2013.

"The number of casualties is much higher than we expected, and is truly shocking."
