It has been confirmed that the three people who died in a house fire in Co Leitrim overnight were members of the same family.

Their names have not been released, as contact is being made with their relatives.

The bodies of a couple - a 75-year-old husband and his 77-year-old wife - and their 34-year-old daughter have been removed from the scene at Lisnabrack.

It is understood that someone driving past the house saw the fire and called the emergency services at 2.20am.

Fire units from Manorhamilton, Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon fought the blaze.

They found the family, who were well known in the area, in a search of the two-storey house.

The bodies have been taken to Sligo General Hospital where post mortem examinations will be carried out.

Manorhamilton Sinn Féin Councillor Seán McSharry described the fire as a "terrible tragedy".
