Funerals for two of the children shot dead during the school shootings in Connecticut in the US are due to take place later today.
They were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where a gunman used an assault rifle to kill six adults and 20 first-graders before taking his own life.
US President Barack Obama addressed an interfaith vigil in the town last night and spoke on the country's failings in protecting its children and demanded changes in response to the shootings.
"We can't tolerate this any more. These tragedies must end. And to end them, we must change," he said, adding that he would bring together law enforcement, teachers, mental health professionals and others to study how to best stop the violence.
The first victims of the shootings - Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto - will be laid to rest this afternoon.
Noah, who was six years old last month, was the youngest victim.
All the dead children were six and seven years old. The school principal, school psychologist and four teachers were also killed.
"We bear responsibility for every child ... This is our first task, caring for our children. It's our first job. If we don't get that right, we don't get anything right," Mr Obama said during his address.
The president offered the "love and prayers of a nation" to families of the victims, saying all Americans stood by their side in mourning the tragic loss.
He said: "I can only hope it helps for you to know that you're not alone in your grief; that our world, too, has been torn apart; that all across this land of ours, we have wept with you."
Mr Obama acknowledged that "no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society," but indicated that he would seek action.
Earlier yesterday, officials formally identified Adam Lanza, 20, as the shooter who ran amok in the picture postcard town.
They confirmed that he shot his mother several times in the head at the house they shared before going to his old school and embarking on a gruesome killing spree.
