A 29-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following the death of Eoghan Dudley on Dawson Street in Dublin last Thursday.
Detective Garda Conor O'Braonain gave evidence of the arrest and charging of Edward Connors of Judge Darley's Hostel in Dublin.
Mr Connors, who is deaf, had the court proceedings interpreted via sign language.
His solicitor Cahir O'Higgins applied to the court for free legal aid for his client.
Mr O'Higgins also applied for medical and interpretation services to be provided to him while on remand.
Judge David McHugh granted the applications.
Mr Connors was remanded in custody to be brought before Cloverhill District Court again on 13 December.
