One man has been stabbed to death and a second man seriously injured after they were attacked at an apartment in Dublin in the early hours of this morning.

The men were attacked following a row at the Herberton Apartments in Rialto at around 5.30am.

Gardaí in Kilmainham have begun a murder investigation and have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.

The stab victims were part of a group of people having a get together at an apartment in the Herberton Complex on St Anthony's Road in Rialto.

At least two other men who were not in the group arrived in the early hours of this morning and a row broke out.

They left but came back a short time later armed with a knife.

A 22-year-old German man sustained serious stab wounds to the stomach, and another man was stabbed at least five times.

Both men were rushed to St James's Hospital, but in spite of the efforts of the medical team, the German man died just after 9am.

The second man's condition is critical.

The scene has been preserved pending a forensic examination.
