A garda has been arrested by investigators from the Garda Ombudsman Commission and is being questioned about an alleged sexual assault.
He is being detained at Loughrea Garda Station.
The offence is alleged to have occurred in the midlands and the garda has been suspended by the Garda Commissioner.
The Garda Ombudsman Commission confirmed the arrest and said a Garda was assisting them with their inquiry into an allegation of a criminal nature
The garda is the first member of the force to be arrested by the Garda Ombudsman since the Commission was set up five years ago
He's being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act and can be questioned for up to 24 hours.
