Double rapist Garg gets 12-year jail sentence

A computer specialist has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for drugging and raping two women after luring them to his home in Dublin.

Kapil Garg, 34, originally from India but living in Whitefriar Place in Dublin 8, had pleaded not guilty but was found guilty by a jury of the offences, which took place in his rented room in July 2011.

Mr Justice Barry White told him that he could have spared his victims a further ordeal if he had not waited until the eve of sentencing to accept responsibility for his crimes.

Garg met two intoxicated women outside a Dublin nightclub at 3am on 2 July 2011.

He lured them back to his rented room at Whitefriar Place by promising them ecstasy, but instead he drugged them and raped them.

Garg, who has a master's degree in computer science from the University of Southern California and has worked in the US, the UK, Australia and Germany, gave each woman half a sedative pill before attacking them.

One of the victims woke up and tried to wake her friend as Garg raped her. However, she fell back asleep only to wake again while she was being raped.

Speaking at the Central Criminal Court, Mr Justice White said he could not ignore Garg's bad character and his previous attack on a woman in the US for which he spent time in the Los Angeles County Jail.

The judge said that incident would most likely have been a sex attack if Garg had not been interrupted.

Justice White sentenced him to 12 years in jail, suspending the final three years.

He directed that €20,000, which had been offered to but rejected by the victims, be returned to Garg's parents.
