Burton meets Labour Senators over Budget concerns

The meeting between Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton and Labour Senators on the Social Welfare Bill has ended.

Ms Burton took the initiative after four Labour Senators publicly expressed unease about some of the measures.

Senator James Heffernan has said he will not be bullied into voting one way or the other on the Bill.

The planned reductions in Child Benefit and the Respite Care Grant are proving difficult for some Senators to justify.

The Government's majority in the Seanad is slim and there is some doubt as to how a number of the Taoiseach's appointees will vote.

A spokesman for the minister said she was concerned that a vote against the Bill would cost the Exchequer €124m in lost revenue by next April, as the Seanad has the power to delay the passage of legislation for 90 days.

He said Ms Burton would exchange views on the Bill with her party colleagues and listen to their concerns about Child Benefit and the Respite Care Grant in particular.

The spokesman said she was hopeful that the Bill would pass through the Seanad, but was not taking any votes for granted.
