White House says jobs data shows economy healing

The White House said that data showing hiring in the US increased in October was proof the economy is on the mend.

It stressed that the nation needs to stay with President Barack Obama's policies to dig out of hole created by the recession.

The last jobs report ahead of the 6 November presidential election beat expectations and showed the economy added 171,000 jobs in October, according to the US Labor Department.

The unemployment rate inched up to 7.9% from 7.8%.

Meanwhile, Mr Obama has secured the endorsement of New York City's mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Mr Bloomberg, whose city was hit hard by superstorm Sandy, said the climate is changing and that Mr Obama has taken major steps in the right direction on that issue.

The vote of confidence from the politically independent third-term mayor of America's largest city was a major boost for Mr Obama.

Both candidates had eagerly sought the backing of Mr Bloomberg, a former Republican who did not endorse a presidential candidate in 2008.

Mr Romney said the uptick in the US employment rate to 7.9% shows the economy continues to struggle.

"Today's increase in the unemployment rate is a sad reminder that the economy is at a virtual standstill," said Mr Romney, who has made his record as a successful businessman the focus of his campaign, arguing that he is better equipped than President  Obama to fix the sputtering economy.

The Obama administration claims credit for preventing deeper problems and said the economy is recovering from the Great Recession that started under his Republican predecessor George W Bush.

In another possible boost for Mr Obama yesterday, government and private sources were reporting a series of encouraging numbers about the economy.

Reports on home prices, worker productivity, auto sales, construction spending, manufacturing and retail sales suggested the recovery was picking up pace, and a measurement of consumer confidence rose to its highest level since February of 2008, nearly five years ago.

Last days of the campaign

Election day is Tuesday, and the two candidates are visiting the all-important swing states on a final campaign blitz.

Both Mr Obama and Mr Romney are pressing intense closing arguments in their race, as officials across the country reported that more than 20m Americans had already cast ballots in early voting states.

Mr Obama moved quickly across three battleground states once he returned to campaigning yesterday.

Mr Romney made three stops in critical Virginia and his campaign launched a tough Spanish-language television advert in Florida showing Venezuela's leftist leader, Hugo Chavez, and Raul Castro's daughter, Mariela, saying they would vote for Mr Obama.

Both candidates are battling for support from the thin slice of undecided voters in nine so-called swing states.

The swing states include Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada, where voters cannot be predicted to reliably vote for the presidential standard-bearer of either the Democrats or Republicans.

Polls show Mr Obama holds a slight lead in a majority of the battleground contests where the outcome of the vote is likely to be determined.

Swing-state Ohio has seen and will receive massive attention from both Mr Obama and Mr Romney. No Republican candidate for the White House has ever won the election without capturing Ohio.

The latest polls show Mr Obama with a slight lead there.
