Student protest calls for X Case legislation

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 21 November 2012 | 22.40

A student protest has taken place in Limerick calling on the Government to legislate for the X Case.

Students from third level colleges across the city gathered at Limerick Institute of Technology to honour the memory of Savita Halappanavar.

The protest was addressed by a number of student leaders, and lecturers who specialise in feminist psychology.

Meanwhile, around 20 MEPs staged a protest outside the European Parliament calling on the Government to introduce abortion legislation.

MEPs from the United European Left, Socialists, Liberals and Greens took part.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny has already received a letter signed by 53 MEPs seeking immediate action.

Previous Dáil vote

When Dublin North TD Clare Daly's Bill was debated in the Dáil in April, it was defeated by 111 votes to 20.

It was supported by four ULA TDs (Clare Daly, Joan Collins, Richard Boyd Barrett and Joe Higgins); nine of the 14 Sinn Féin TDs (Gerry Adams, Seán Crowe, Michael Colreavy, Dessie Ellis, Martin Ferris, Pádraig MacLochlainn, Mary Lou McDonald, Aengus Ó Snodaigh and Brian Stanley); six Independents (Stephen Donnelly, John Halligan, Luke 'Ming' Flanagan, Catherine Murphy, Maureen O'Sullivan and Mick Wallace); and one Labour TD who had already lost the party whip (Patrick Nulty).

It was opposed by Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil, as well as by three Independent TDs (Noel Grealish, Michael Healy-Rae and Mattie McGrath).
