John Kerins was found dead in his home near Bailieborough yesterday morning.
Although it is technically still being treated as a suspicious death, it is expected that when Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis concludes his examination it will become a murder investigation.
The 49-year-old's body was found in the sitting room of his home at Cornaveigh near Bailieborough yesterday morning.
It appeared he had been shot.
Mr Kerin's two-storey house on a quiet county road is still sealed off as forensic experts continue their work there.
Supt Gerry O'Brien, of Bailieboro Garda Station, has reiterated his appeal for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Cornaveigh area between 4pm on Thursday and 9am yesterday morning to come forward.
Mr Kerins had been a detective in the northeast, and had also worked in the fraud squad in Dublin. He was medically discharged from the force in 2009.
He was a suspect in relation to the disappearance of a local man a year-and-a-half ago. Gardaí also suspect he was involved in the drugs trade and handling stolen property.
