A 40-year-old man has been found guilty of the murder of a taxi driver in Cork two years ago.

Lloyd Buckley, of Flat F, Rocksprings Terrace, St Luke's, Cork, had pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Michael Healy between 18 September and 22 September, 2010.

However, after deliberating for 90 minutes today, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder.

Mr Justice Paul Carney handed down a mandatory life sentence.

Apologising to Mr Healy's family, Lloyd Buckley said he hoped the family would some day be able to believe that he never meant to hurt Michael in any way that September week.

In his victim impact statement to the court, Michael Healy's brother, Dermot, recalled the day he first met the defendant and found his brother dead.

He said he feels disgusted and angry when he thinks of meeting Lloyd Buckley, looking at him, knowing what he has done and knowing that Mike could have been lying in the corner of the room for two days at least.

Breaking down in the witness box, Mr Healy said it saddened him greatly that the last image in his mind is of seeing his brother being removed from his flat in a coffin and knowing he will never see his face again.
