Dermot Griffin from Ballyfermot Road appeared before Tallaght District Court charged with the manslaughter of 12-year-old Stephen Hughes Connors in 2001.
The court heard that Mr Griffin was arrested this morning in the confines of the courthouse and made no reply when charged.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next Wednesday.
Stephen and a 14-year-old friend were sleeping in a makeshift hut, made out of pallets, doors and carpet, at Rossfield Avenue in Brookfield, when a fire broke out at around 5am on 1 September 2001.
While his friend managed to escape the blaze, Stephen did not.
His family was in court for today's brief hearing.
