ICI criticises rise in immigrant registration fee

From tomorrow the fee for immigrants to Ireland who are not citizens of the EU, Iceland, Norway, Lichtenstein or Switzerland will pay €300 to register, up from €150.

Legally resident nationals of the non-European Economic Area, who enter Ireland with the intention of living here for a period of more than three months, must register with their local immigration registration officer.

Once this happens, an immigration certificate is issued by the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

Those who are exempt from the fee include convention refugees, those under 18 years at the time of registration and spouses, widows and widowers of Irish citizens.

The ICI has described the increase as unfair and unjust and said the most vulnerable members of the migrant community would be hardest hit.

It said the doubling of the fee was announced with just five days notice and without consultation.

It also said that Irish registration fees are now amongst the highest in Europe.
