14 killed in Israel-Gaza violence

Three people were killed in southern Israel by rockets which Israeli media said were fired from Gaza.

It marks the first Israeli fatalities since militants fired into Israel after it killed a Hamas chief yesterday.

Eleven Palestinians - mainly militants, but also children - were killed in the ensuing Israeli operation.

Yesterday, Israel assassinated Hamas's military chief and shelled the enclave, killing 13 people.

Among the dead were five militants, three children and a pregnant woman. More than 100 were wounded.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting last night to discuss the Israeli assault. It called for a halt to the violence, but took no action.

Israel has warned Hamas that all its men were in its sights and dropped leaflets in Gaza telling residents to keep their distance from militants and Hamas facilities.

"The leaflets stress that Hamas is dragging the region toward violence, and that the IDF is prepared to defend the residents of the State of Israel until quiet is restored to the region," the military said in a statement.

Israel weathered censure from influential Arab powers Egypt and Qatar. The United States condemned Hamas, shunned by the West as an obstacle to peace for its refusal to renounce violence and recognise Israel.

Hamas has said the killing of its top commander, Ahmed Al-Jaabari, would "open the gates of hell" for Israel. It also appealed to neighbouring Egypt to halt the "barbaric" assault.

Talks held to quell violence

US President Barack Obama and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon each held separate talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi last night.

In a statement, the White House said Mr Obama the Israeli leader to make every effort to avoid civilian casualties and reiterated US support for Israel's right to self-defence in light of rocket attacks from Gaza.

The White House said Mr Obama and Mr Mursi agreed on the importance of "working to de-escalate the situation as quickly as possible".

The UN has said Mr Ban voiced his expectation that "Israeli reactions are measured so as not to provoke a new cycle of bloodshed" and discussed with Mr Mursi "the need to prevent any further deterioration".

Mr Netanyahu has warned that Israel is prepared to expand its military operations Gaza if necessary.
