Mark Bridger has appeared in a Welsh court charged with the abduction and murder of five-year-old April Jones.
The 46-year-old former lifeguard wept as he spoke to confirm his name, age and address, during the four-minute hearing.
Mr Bridger is also charged with the unlawful disposal and concealment of her body with intent to pervert the course of justice.
He was remanded in custody and will appear at Caernarfon Crown Court on Wednesday.
April went missing from her home on the Bryn-y-Gog estate in Machynlleth last Monday.
Yesterday, hundreds of people turned out to pay their respects at a service for the young child.
April, who has cerebral palsy, was playing on her bicycle as a treat for a glowing school report when she disappeared.
The search for her body is continuing with 100 specialist police officers drafted in to join the operation.
Elsewhere, a man who posted "despicable" comments on his Facebook page about April has been jailed for 12 weeks.
Matthew Woods, 19, from Chorley, Lancashire, made a number of derogatory posts about April and missing Madeline McCann after getting the idea from the website Sickipedia.
He also wrote comments of a sexually explicit nature about the five-year-old.
