Jason Daly, 42, of PJ Delaney Flats, Main Street, Mountrath, but originally from Sandyford in Dublin, strangled Diane Burroughs in her bedroom on 16 April 2011.
He then tried to make her death look like suicide.
Diane Burroughs' family said afterwards that justice had been done but that no amount of time served would bring the mother-of-one back.
Ms Burroughs from Athy in Co Kildare had an on-off relationship with her neighbour Jason Daly.
On the day of her murder, they had been drinking and listening to music when Daly stabbed her with a glass and strangled her with her nightdress.
He then tried to make her death look like suicide by putting the broken glass he used to cut her into her hand after she had died.
In a victim impact statement read to the court today, Diane Burroughs' family said knowing how much she suffered and the fear she felt brings shock, anger and despair.
Her brother John said he was sorry he was not there to protect her when she needed him most.
The family also said today the trial had opened their eyes to the pain some people can inflict on others and that life can be taken away in a horrific moment.
Diane Burroughs' family also said that the young mother will be greatly missed - most of all by her ten-year-old daughter whom she will never see grow into a beautiful lady.
Jason Daly's lawyer told the court his remorse was genuine and he had been instructed to apologise on Daly's behalf.
Mr Justice Barry White sentenced Daly to the mandatory term of life in prison.
